The Kid And Kumon During The Holidays

I lack for inspiration these days that even though The Kid has had lots of “experiences” over the past month that I should talk about (because why else would I continue blogging here if I’m not going to be documenting all that Jazz?), I could not make a single post.

So, I’ll try for a facile writing (i.e. writing without expending serious thought or depth of feeling), and hope that it does accomplish at least one thing– record.

So, The Kid has been attending Kumon for over two weeks now (he’s currently on Christmas and New Year vacation, doing his worksheets at home). We decided on Math. I do want him to take Reading too, just as soon as he’s adjusted, before regular schooling starts. And then drop Reading when he starts school and continue only during school vacation. At least that’s the plan– I’ve learned late in life that you can only plan your life as much, there are things you can’t control, and that is that.

Ne-Yo’s very first “Very Good” Stamps

Anyways, I’m happy thus far (not that I expect to be disappointed any time in the future) to see progress. For instance, exactly two weeks on the program and The Kid is already counting “mentally”. When he started, he already knows the concept of counting (as opposed to reciting from 1 to 10), but now, I notice him skip-counting/pointing some objects and just arriving at the correct number of objects there are. He’s also got in the habit of counting objects he sees, although there’s still a lot of resistance (and crying) for “homework time”. This, I don’t expect to change soon, but as long as we’re managing fine, it’s OK.

That’s it for now. He generally enjoys going to school and seeing his “classmates” — or it could be the promise of a new toy if he “studies hard”, I’m not sure, but I’m not opposed to using toys as rewards anyway, especially as I don’t go over the P50 mark. The Kid knows this. Expensive toys are out of the question, because it’s his “job” to study (I pointed out that kids study and adults work). I just hope the one’s we’re buying aren’t overly cheap because they’re laden with brain-damaging lead.

OK. That’s really it for now.

P.S.

Hope you all had a merry Christmas. I’ll hopefully make some blog posts about ours.

Au revoir!
